Big Bend National Park
Big Bend is one of our more favorite National Parks and we have made five trips there over the past few years and explored most of the park. Our trip in 2008-09 we hiked most of the trails. There was a flood of the Rio Grande prior to our first visit, as the pictures show, and some of the trails were closed. We returned a couple months later and were able to hike into Santa Elena canyon.
Our 2013-14 trip we took the jeep on most of the back roads. We did not hike very far from the jeep because of the proximity to the border. We were able to cross into the village of Boquillas, Mexico
when they opened up the border for a few hours one afternoon. U.S. Customs has a video system connected to their offices in Yuma making this work and then there has to be a Mexican official on there
side to check passports etc. Quite the experience and nothing like Cancun.
Note: Chisos Basin Campground. Sites are small and very few will fit a 24 ft RV. The other campgrounds can accommodate all sizes. Your best bet here for the larger units is Rio Grande Village Campground.
